a knitting app designed for how you actually work.
we'll handle the math, metrics, and memory so you can focus on the making.
join the waitlist and we'll let you know when we're ready to launch! get those needles ready.
features designed by an actual knitter
upload your knit or crochet pattern & we'll handle the rest! interactive, step-by-step instructions created so that you can just focus on the stitches.
I'm so over zooming into a chart on a PDF and crossing off rows with the draw tool!!! we've got first-of-its-kind (don't quote us on that) interactive color work and cable charts that are actually embedded in the app.
(give)(us)(your)(measurements)(or)(whoever)(you're)(knitting)(for) — and the right size shows up in every step.
wherever your pattern has a repeat, there's already a counter waiting for you in the project! just one row counter? I hardly know her
everyone should know how much work goes into a project! yarn used, time spent knitting, projects completed. maybe we'll do a Knitting Wrapped come year-end…
we've all got a stash we can't keep track of. all your yarn, logged and organized in one place.
every pattern costs us real money to process, but we think it's worth it. we think you will too.
for knitters just getting started
recommended for frequent knitters
everything in free, plus:
for knitters ready to dive in
you upload a PDF of a knitting or crochet pattern and Spool reads it — pulling out the steps, stitch counts, sizing info, and charts — and turns it into an interactive project you can actually work from. no more squinting at a PDF.
we support most standard knitting and crochet patterns in PDF format — sweaters, socks, shawls, hats, you name it. colorwork and cable charts are fully supported too. we're actively working on other formats like web-based patterns, Ravelry integration, and book patterns, so stay tuned.
on the free and maker plans, imports reset monthly — they don't roll over. founding member imports never expire!
yes — when you upload a pattern, we use AI to read and analyze it, converting it into the interactive step-by-step experience in the app. but that's where AI's involvement ends. we've deliberately structured Spool so that each pattern is only processed once at upload. after that, everything runs without AI, which keeps the app fast, your data private, and our energy footprint low.
no. we use Claude via Anthropic's API, which includes the ability to opt out of future model training. that means the patterns you upload to Spool are processed to build your project and nothing else — they won't be used to train or improve any AI model outside of Spool.
every time a pattern gets uploaded, we run it through AI to build your interactive project, and that processing has a real cost. a subscription lets us keep the lights on without charging you a fee every time you cast on something new. we want this tool to be as accessible as possible, and we recognize that knitters complete projects at very different rates — which is why we offer a free tier, a monthly subscription priced as low as we can make it, and a one-time founding member purchase for those who'd rather not subscribe at all.
android is on the roadmap — we want to get it right before we stretch ourselves too thin. waitlist folks will hear about it first.
not at the moment — but if there's enough demand for it, it's something we'd definitely consider adding down the road. we're all ears, so let us know!
hi! my name is Emma, and me and my boyfriend Cliff are the creators of Spool! coming to you from Seattle, WA, USA.
the idea for Spool came from Cliff watching me scribbling all over my patterns: circling size options in every step, crossing off rows in colorwork charts, circling notes in the margins, forgetting that I sized up a needle and knitting a sleeve with the wrong gauge, etc, etc. because he is a solution-oriented software developer, he figured there had to be a better way. over the last 7+ months, I've been schooling him in sweater construction, gauge, and types of stitches — and he's been teaching me about software architecture, APIs, and product development.
Cliff is a software developer with a master's degree and more than 8 years of experience, and I'm so grateful that he is bringing his expertise and attention-to-detail to this project! I work in digital marketing — and have been knitting since November 2024. I've since knit 11 sweaters!!!
we're making Spool for knitters who are serious about their craft and deserve tools that feel the same way.
